About Us
Hickory Hollow is a rural, no-kill animal shelter, in Leon, Kansas, where we typically house between 25-40 dogs and 40+ cats, along with goats, horses, and donkeys. We have been rescuing animals in order to give them a second chance for 20+ years.
Since founding Hickory Hollow Animal Refuge, staff has been able to take in nearly 1,000 animals, and directly provided new homes to around 500 cats and dogs. Some of the dogs and cats we care for have been with us for over a year, and while we love them like our own, we just want to see them go to a loving home where they can receive all of the attention they deserve.
Animals enter our care, primarily from shelters in neighboring towns and states, that have found themselves on death row. We also have taken in animals that come from owner surrenders or have been dumped on our property, as well as neglect or abandonment cases. We have taken in animals from Wichita, KS and El Dorado, KS shelters, among many others, and some animals come from as far as Oklahoma and Missouri.
Our Mission
Our mission is to bring forth a second chance for homeless and vulnerable animals, while providing them a safe space to live that gives them a sense of “home” until they are adopted. We hope to continue to help rescue any animals we can that have the unfortunate possibility of being euthanized or left with nowhere else to go. Furthermore, we intend to help spread awareness of the importance of adopting animals instead of buying from breeders or mills, and controlling the homeless animal population the best, and most humane way we know how to! We believe that every pet deserves to experience the love and safety that can be provided by a forever home.
